UTAH COUNTY BUSINESSMAN DONATES $100,000 TO NONPROFIT SUTHERLAND INSTITUTE
Funds will be used to increase reach of Sutherland’s Transcend Series in 2006
Salt Lake City & Orem, UT, January 10, 2006 – Sutherland Institute, a nonprofit, public policy group and Makau Corporation, a rising e-learning provider, today announced their partnership to combine technology and messaging to serve a larger audience. Funds are being donated by Utah County businessman John Jacob.
“We are pleased that this donation will enable us to partner with Makau in developing the
means by which we can extend the Transcend Series to a wider group of participants and
improve its effectiveness,” said Stan Rasmussen, senior vice president of the Sutherland
Institute.
According to John Jacob, board member of Makau Corporation, Sutherland’s Transcend
Series, an innovative civic-leadership development program, is providing the right
information for the right reasons. He was so impressed on his first visit to the Sutherland
Institute that he was motivated to help Sutherland get their message to more people.
“Sutherland’s Transcend Series is excellent for elected officials and community leaders, in a non-partisan and effective way, to refine their abilities to serve the public,” said Jacob. “We want to make the Sutherland opportunity available to all who would like to learn more.”
Focusing on three dimensions of effective community and political leadership – Character,
Intellect and Process – the Transcend Series is a schedule of monthly sessions for elected,
community and business leaders and interested citizens who are seeking new ways to
effectively understand and influence public policy and the community around them. All nine
Transcend Series sessions are designed to equip attendees with increased understanding and
better tools to serve and lead in their respective roles.
“Participants include a bi-partisan core group of elected and public officials comprised of
state legislators and county and city officials from throughout the state,” said Rasmussen.
“Feedback suggests that we are making real progress toward the accomplishment of our intent – to equip policy makers and influencers with the understanding and skills necessary to find
lasting solutions. Although our primary service area is Utah, we attract interest of
organizations from across the nation.”

ABOUT THE SUTHERLAND INSTITUTE
An independent, nonprofit, public policy group serving Utah since 1995, the Sutherland
Institute advocates in behalf of civil society – private, non-governmental institutions
comprising the common good. Bringing innovative and thoughtful ideas to policy makers and
fellow citizens, the Institute is constantly pressing for lasting solutions to community
problems by transcending politics as usual. With a primary focus on education, poverty and
family, their work is grounded in the principles of private initiative, limited government and
family as the fundamental unit of society.
ABOUT THE SUTHERLAND TRANSCEND SERIES
In early 2004, the Sutherland Institute saw the need for a way to encourage and support
elected and other community leaders in their efforts to become better informed and equipped
to make the positive difference they seek in the state and in their communities.
Acknowledging that many one-day or several-day, intensive seminar events were available to
civic leaders – with minimally-impactful, short-lived results (what some in the training arena
refer to as “hit-and-runs”) – the Institute sought a more meaningful civic-leader development
process.
Having recognized this need, Sutherland identified the elements that would form the
foundation of what would eventually be referred to as the Sutherland Transcend Series.
Those elements are:
In its first two years, the Transcend Series has attracted a diverse gathering of state and local leaders from across the social-political spectrum, each desiring to apply their better self to public and community, to improve their ability to listen, understand, and find value in the opinions of others, and to transcend politics as usual in their search for lasting solutions to community problems.
